Welcome to the Grant Family Medicine Residency Class of 2025!

Hashim Ahmed, MD (he/him) - Northeast Ohio Medical University

Hashim was born in Ireland but raised close to Cleveland, Ohio in a town called Brecksville. Initially hoping to be drafted into the NBA, he tried out for his 7th-grade basketball team but didn't get past the tryouts. From there, he turned his attention toward medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree from Youngstown State University and his MD from Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Hashim felt that the best way for him to make a difference in patients' lives was to become a primary care physician. The scope of family medicine is also something that drew him in, as he loves learning and hopes to be a life-long student as a physician. He is interested in various areas, including but not limited to women's health, LGBTQIA+ care, and pediatrics. Hashim chose the Grant Family Medicine program because he was impressed by its welcoming, supportive atmosphere, the diversity and inclusion of its residents, and the empathy shown by the faculty.

In his free time, Hashim loves reading. You can catch him on days off on the couch with his cats Mink and Talia, drinking coffee and reading a good book. He also enjoys video games, running, traveling, watching basketball, and streaming Netflix.

Peyton Couch, MD (she/her) - University of Kentucky College of Medicine

Peyton was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. Growing up she enjoyed visiting family in rural Eastern Kentucky and exploring the outdoors. She attended Transylvania University and earned her B.A. in Molecular Biology and Spanish Language and Literature while continuing to play in the university’s chamber orchestra as a violinist. After graduation, she continued her education at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine where she was able to explore her passion for providing care for vulnerable populations.

Peyton was drawn to Family Medicine because of her desire to establish continuity with patients, develop meaningful relationships, and provide comprehensive care. She wants to experience each season, inspiring or challenging, with patients throughout their entire lives. She was drawn to Grant during interview season due to the opportunity to train in full spectrum Family Medicine including strong obstetric experiences, dedication to serving the community, and a welcoming culture. Currently, her interests are broad, but include women’s health, POCUS, preventative care, and working with underserved populations. While the vision of her future practice is still unknown, Peyton wishes to use her strengths to work alongside patients to empower them to use the tools at hand to manage their health.

Outside of medicine, Peyton enjoys hiking with her husband Brandon and their Australian Shepherd, Maple. You can usually find them at farmers markets or the dog park. During free time Peyton likes baking, crafting, and hand lettering!

Naga Edara, DO (she/they) - Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine

Naga “Maddy” Edara grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Pittsburgh, earning a degree in Neuroscience, and attended medical school at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Maddy became interested in Family Medicine because of the unique opportunity to build lifelong relationships with and provide comprehensive health care to patients of all ages and backgrounds. She has diverse interests within Family Medicine, including advocacy and care for underserved populations, including LGBTQ+ communities, and sports medicine. Maddy was drawn to Grant because of the program’s emphasis on full-spectrum Family Medicine and its commitment to advocacy and promoting health equity and justice in the community.

In her free time, Maddy enjoys being outdoors, cooking and baking (and eating!), spending time with her friends and family, and doting on her dog, Astro.

Willian Godoy, MD (he/him) - Ross University School of Medicine

Willian (Will for short) was originally born in Cuba but was raised in Miami, Florida from a very young age. He attended Florida International University for undergrad before completing medical school at Ross University School of Medicine. Although he found that he enjoyed most areas of medicine, he felt a stronger connection and sense of belonging in Family Medicine.

As a proud first-generation Latino and member of the LGBTQ+ spectrum, he has firsthand witnessed the positive impact that Family Medicine can have on minorities. Although the field has much to offer, he is especially interested in sports medicine, advocacy, and LGBTQ+ healthcare. As a physician, he hopes to provide excellent care to all patients, especially those in underserved populations and within his community. He hopes to further bridge the gap to the healthcare we all deserve whilst committing to his core belief that a true act of kindness always sparks another and it is through kindness and understanding that we can heal the world.

Outside of medicine, Will is a devoted family member. He is thrilled to be living in Columbus with his husband, Kevin, and his three dogs (Bruce, Bob, and Theo). Will also enjoys traveling, working out, spending time outdoors, playing volleyball, reading, and considers himself an adventurer.

Neelam Jhurani, MD (she/her) - University of Kentucky College of Medicine

Neelam grew up in Richmond, VA and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with degrees in Biochemistry and Computer Science. She then moved to Louisville, KY for a gap year scribing and met her girlfriend. Neelam later completed her medical education at the University of Kentucky.

Neelam had no idea what specialty she wanted to do when she started medical school. She even very briefly considered surgery but quickly learned the OR was not the place for her. She belonged in a clinic setting where she could build meaningful, longterm relationships with patients of all ages, be the primary contact within the healthcare system, encourage preventive health, and dabble in a little bit of everything. Neelam has particular interests in behavioral health, LGBTQ+ care, adolescent medicine, and reproductive health.

Grant stood out very early on as not only a robust training environment but as a group of people who were always learning and growing all the time just for the sake of being better. The faculty and residents were all passionate advocates for their patients and community, and honestly, were always having a fantastic time together. The level of friendship, support, and chosen family that was visible just from short interactions during interviews was unparalleled. Neelam knew Grant was the place for her when she walked away from the interview with new friends.

Outside of medicine, Neelam enjoys exploring new restaurants and cafes, going to museums, concerts, and musicals, taking her girlfriend's dog, Mushu, for walks, reading, baking, doing puzzles, and playing co-op games on her Switch.

Sachin Jindal, MD (he/him) - Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine

Sachin was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and grew up in Toledo, Ohio. He moved to Columbus, Ohio after high school and attended The Ohio State University where he majored in public health, sparking his passion for primary care. After college, Sachin moved to Cleveland, Ohio and spent a year working through AmeriCorps at a community center in Chagrin Falls Park. He then moved to Dayton, Ohio and attended Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.

Sachin was drawn to Grant because of its broad training, commitment to underserved medicine, and the ability to practice full-spectrum family medicine. He is constantly inspired by faculty and residents who dedicate their time and energy to improving the community where they live and practice. He looks forward to a career practicing full-spectrum family medicine with a focus on health care policy.

In his free time, Sachin enjoys playing music, working out, reading, and watching sports, especially the Milwaukee Bucks.

Rachel Kalthoff, MD (she/her) - Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine

Rachel grew up in rural Michigan across the street from a dairy farm and was one of five siblings who were all highly competitive 4h-ers. Being pragmatic, she studied English and Latin in college and then went on to get a humanities master’s degree. After a gap year volunteering and working as a nurse’s aide, she decided to transition to medicine.

Her interest in family medicine stems from her love of getting to know patients and develop long term relationships—something that drew her to medicine to begin with. She knew that with the breadth of family medicine, she’d never have a boring or routine day. She is also really excited about the opportunities that family medicine provides for advocacy (one of the reasons she is so excited about Grant!). Speaking of Grant, Rachel fell in love with the program pretty early on for its welcoming and intentional culture (#grantlove) combined with a reputation for clinical excellence and the opportunity to perform lots of procedures.

When she’s not doing medical stuff, Rachel loves to hike, rock-climb, camp, and run—all of these with her long-suffering husband in tow. On rainy days, she likes naps, hanging with her exceptionally soft cat, Virgil, and catching up with family, friends, (and Netflix.)

Samantha Laing, DO (she/her) - Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine

Samantha was born and raised just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. She is incredibly close to her family, including her younger sister who made her a first time Auntie in May 2022. She is a first-generation college student and received her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Bowling Green State University. She took a year off after graduation to work for the Cleveland Clinic as a patient care nursing assistant before moving to Athens, Ohio to begin medical school at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Samantha had begun medical school with an initial interested in Family Medicine. She was drawn to the ability to treat patients of all ages with a multitude of different needs. Samantha was interested in many different facets of medicine and the ability to practice a bit of everything within the realm of Family Medicine made her decision that much easier. She is passionate about behavioral health, sexual and reproductive health, adolescent medicine, and LGBTQ+ care. The diverse and underserved population that Grant serves made this the perfect residency program for her.

In her free time, Samantha will take any opportunity to go to a concert and see her favorite artist live, especially if that artist is John Mayer. She enjoys trying new coffee shops, listening to her favorite true crime podcasts, thrifting, and shopping for new books or vinyl records to add to her collection. Samantha also loves the outdoors, whether that is hiking at one of the National Parks out West, camping in the woods, or taking her kayaks out on the water.

Brittain Waller, MD (she/her) - Howard University College of Medicine
