Curricular Overview

Our faculty and residents continue to update and improve our curriculum to reflect the changing specialty of Family Medicine and address the needs of our community. At the heart of our curriculum is an emphasis on continuity of care, resident wellness, and scope of practice. Most of our experiences are scheduled in 2 week rotations to allow for longitudinal learning. This also allows us to pair more inpatient intensive rotations with ambulatory rotations. Our residents are supported in their growth and given graduated autonomy at every step of the way. Below are additional highlights of the curriculum:

Class Based Rotations

Each class has 1-2 rotations during the year during which time they can spend quality time together while receiving personalized educational experiences that pertain to their place in training.
- PGY1: Immersion and Wellness rotations
- PGY2: Leadership rotation
- PGY3: Practice Management

Longitudinal Experiences

Certain elements of the curriculum are integrated throughout the three years of residency. These include ambulatory care, population health, behavioral health, quality/safety, research, addiction medicine, community medicine, and procedural skills.

Pediatrics

The majority of our pediatric education happens within the continuity panel at our office. Residents gain exposure to panel management through chart audits of their pediatric patients. They also round on continuity newborns in the well baby nursery and have dedicated nursery rotations during which they work with the NICU attendings. They get exposure to newborn procedures, including circumcisions and frenotomies. Additionally, residents rotate through Nationwide Children’s Hospital for inpatient, emergency medicine, and additional outpatient pediatric experiences.

Inpatient (Starling Family Medicine)

Our inpatient team cares for our office’s patients and unassigned patients with assistance from resident/faculty PCP. The service is supervised by a faculty member and a teaching hospitalist. The team census is typically between 20-30 patients. We also have 1-2 students rotating with us. Residents admit patients to the CCU, intermediate unit, and medical/surgical floors. They also manage and perform procedures for the code blues, rapid response calls, and septic shock alerts. In addition to these inpatient rotations, residents have specific rotations dedicated to surgery, critical care, emergency medicine, urgent care, and consult services.

Obstetrics/Reproductive Health

Our obstetrics experience at Grant will prepare you for prenatal care, labor and delivery care, and postpartum care. Residents also gain significant experience in high risk obstetrics by co-managing with MFM. We are certified in Centering Pregnancy. Our addiction medicine fellowship has a dedicated prenatal clinic for pregnant patients with substance use. Dating and growth scans are all done in our office. Additionally, residents gain exposure to panel management through chart reviews of our pregnant patients.

Additional Ambulatory Care

In addition to their continuity office experience, residents rotate through a variety of departments and private practices to expand their knowledge of ambulatory care. These experiences include, but are not limited to sports medicine, geriatrics, palliative care, PM&R, cardiology, neurology, dermatology, and rheumatology.

Electives

Residents can truly make their electives their own! From global health and advocacy to faculty development and LGBTQ+ medicine, residents can create objectives and experiences related to their interests.
